► Supporting our community - Woolworths South Melbourne -
Wed 25 January 2012
SMLSC was selected by our local Woolworths as their community charity organisation for the Aussie day BBQ initiative.
A very big thankyou to the following members that volunteered at very short notice to man the sausage sizzle BBQ.
Christine Cardwell
Dvid Porter
Belinda Porter
Alison Porter
Ming Wang
Tracey Rothwell
Peter McKay
Belinda Glare
Ariarne Graham
Thankyou to James Cardwell, Sienna and Beau Graham for their patience and support whilst their parents slaved over the BBQ.
Woolworths supplied all of the sausages, bread and condiments for the BBQ and we had $800 in sales. Woolworth matched that amount so in total South Melbourne raised $1600.
Well done to all involved and a big thank you to Steven Filianos the Woolworths South Melbourne Store Manager who selected South Melbourne LSC for this fundraising event!

► Results : Junior Pool Carnival
Junior Pool Carnival – Sunday 15th May 2011
Sandringham Leisure Centre – King Club
What a great turn out of the red green and white army – 16 competitors, and every one of them receiving a ribbon or 2, or 6 for some of them. We got off to a brilliant start with the first event with our resident fishes Ashleigh and Brittany OBrien taking out 1st and 3rd respectively in the obstacle race then followed by our U/12 boys in Matthew and Edward taking out 2nd and 3rd.
This great start continued throughout the afternoon with one of our littlest water babies in Daisy Graham taking out first place again in the U/8 girls’ freestyle and not to let the team down our U/8 boy Fergus Kininmonth came home with 2nd place.
Majority of our team were only ever experiencing their second carnival, so lots of encouragement and mimicking stroke action on side of pool deck had Christine and Christian exhausted by the end of the meet.
However they still had enough energy for the parent child relays along with Fiona Hinrichsen, Andy Graham, Maureen O’Keefe and Damian Kininmonth – and all coming away with ribbons as well.
Neil OBrien and Ines Rains assisted with officiating with stop watch precision, Barbara Morgan was Carnival Referee and our team of roaring supporters/parents in the stands kept the kids revved up for their next event.
All in all a great team effort and we only missed by a measly 3 points in winning the carnival.
Now for the Victorian Championships on Sunday 5th June at 2.00pm. We would love to see as many of you come along and cheer our team on – or you could be apart of it?

► The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (2 to 10 April 2011)
The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, or more commonly known as Aussies, was held at Kurrawa on the Gold Coast from 2 to 10 April 2011. South Melbourne Life Saving Club had a number of teams attending the championships, one of which was the Under 17 Patrol Competition Team. The Patrol Competition is a team based event comprising of 4 members. They undertake a number of tasks including: a theory paper, surf (swim) team’s race, swims - tube - board rescue relay, resuscitation test and a practical scenario. The scenario is set up as a patrol situation where the team may need to undertake a number of rescues and first aids in a time of 10 minutes.
The team made up of; Mary Veal (parent and team support) Lucy O'Brien, Patrena Staff, Ashley Munday and Chris Veal came 4th overall, narrowly missing out on 3rd place by a mere 6 points. This team won the Victorian State event with team member Jazmine Elomolla, who unfortunately had to withdraw from the team after breaking her arm, which is when Lucy O'Brien stepped in to help the team. A fantastic achievement by all!
Over the rest of the championships, South Melbourne had their Under 15 First Aid Team competing, who also won the state championships, Open First Aid Team who won the state championships and our Under 17 R & R (Rescue & Resuscitation) Team who came 2nd at the state championships.
